Human Powered Helicopter: Straight Up Difficult

The American Helicopter Society (AHS) is scope of the Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition has promised a 250 000 USD prize to anyone who builds a human-powered helicopter that can hover for 60 seconds, reach a height of 3 meters (10 feet), and stay in a field of 10 m2.

Turns out, that is much harder than it sounds. The prize has been unclaimed for more than three decades.
